November 5, 2024 General Election and Referendum Election - The General Election is held nationally on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. In 2024, Maine voters will elect the President, one of Maine’s two United States Senators, Maine’s two Representatives to Congress, all members of the Maine Legislature (State Senators and State Representatives) and certain county officers. County officers will vary depending on the county, but include the following: Judge of Probate, Register of Probate, County Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Sheriff, District Attorney and County Commissioner.

ABSENTEE VOTING - REQUEST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT
Voters may submit a request for an absentee ballot using one of the following methods:
- REQUEST ON-LINE The State of Maine Absentee Ballot Request Site Click Here
- REQUEST BY PHONE Bethel residents may call the Town Clerk’s Office at 207-824-2669 to request an absentee ballot.
- REQUEST BY MAIL Complete the Absentee Ballot Form (Click Here) and submit it to the Town Clerk’s Office to have an absentee ballot mailed to you. You may use this form if an immediate family member wishes to submit the ballot order on your behalf, or if you wish to designate a third person to pick up a ballot for you.
VOTING ABSENTEE BALLOT AT THE TOWN OFFICE: Voters may vote an absentee ballot at the Town Office beginning approximately 30 days before Election Day. The office is open Monday through Friday 8AM to 4PM.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: The deadline to request an absentee ballot is close of business on October 31, 2024. Absentee ballot requests submitted after this date may be accepted only if the voter qualifies under certain special circumstances.
Absentee ballots must be returned to the Registrar of Voters/Town Clerk by 8PM on Tuesday November, 5, 2024 (Election Day), coinciding with the close of the polls. If returning ballot on Election Day the ballot needs to be returned to the polling location - 85 Vernon Street Mundt-Allen American Legion Post #81.
RETURNING YOUR BALLOT:
- TOWN OFFICE: Deliver the sealed ballot envelope to the Town Office Monday through Friday 8AM to 4PM.
- BY MAIL: If returning your ballot by mail, we suggest mailing it no later than 1 week prior to the election, to ensure that it is received by 8PM on Election Day.
RECEIVING ASSISTANCE FROM ANOTHER PERSON: If you require assistance in completing the Absentee Ballot Application, the Aide Certificate must be completed by whomever assisted you. If you require assistance in reading or marking the ballot, you may ask someone to aide you. In addition to the aide, one other person must be present as a witness. Before you mark your ballot, the witness must see that it is blank. While voting, you may not talk to anyone except the aide. You or your aide, if you are unable, must sign the return envelope on the highlighted signature line. The aide must complete the “Aide Certificate” and the witness must complete the “Witness Certificate”, both located on the back of the envelope.
BALLOTS ISSUED TO A 3RD PERSON: At your request, your ballot may be issued to a third person who is not a member of your immediate family, who may carry the ballot to you. For this reason, you must mark your ballot in the presence of a witness, even if you choose to return the ballot yourself. Witnesses can be: one person who is a Notary Public, a Municipal Clerk, a Clerk of the Courts, or two other persons. There must be no communication between the voter and the witnesses regarding ballot races. Mark the ballot so it is not possible for the witnesses to see how the ballot is voted. The “Witness Certificate” must be completed and signed by the witnesses.
REPLACEMENT BALLOT: If you make a mistake when marking your ballot and need a replacement ballot, or if you have any questions, contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 207-824-2669.
IMPORTANT DATES AND DEADLINES
August 5, 2024 Earliest date to request an absentee ballot.
October 7, 2024 Anticipated date on which absentee ballots will be available.
October 15, 2024 Last day for Town Clerk’s Office to receive voter registration by mail.
October 16, 2024 Closed period begins. All voter registrations must be submitted in person.
Early October - October 31, 2024 Once absentee ballots are received absentee voting will be available at the Town Office between 8AM and 4PM.
October 31, 2024 Last day to request an absentee ballot.
November 5, 2024 Election Day. Polls open from 8AM to 8PM Mundt-Allen American Legion Post #81 at 85 Vernon Street Bethel
Voter Registration is available at the Town Office during regular business hours. You can also register to vote on Election Day at the polls.
